Fire magic within her world requires a fuel source of some kind to get more than a few sparks or just heat. For most people, this is sawdust, but in Maya's case, she pulls sugar straight from her body (allowing her to use magic even without ammo and dry weather) which gives her magic a distinct candyfloss smell.
