Reviewing this is rough.
I enjoy the music a ton as it sounds close to the Jack Strauber off the wall Danny Elfman sound and the colors you choose are great, the use of red, blues and yellow works well together with the monochromatic black and white designs and all the little characters are wonderful and the expressions and character is wonderful. Stylistically it is a little cliche here and there (black ink covering character ) but the presentation makes it work and it fits with the music.
Here's where it falls short for me: The animation is too limited and makes the whole presentation feel stiff and janky and not in a way that feels good. Stop motion is really time consuming so I understand cutting some movement corners and I enjoyed shots like the shaking legs, but it feels like the amount of "cheats" in making the armature's movement come from physically moving it instead of frame by frame animation with stop motion cheapens the experience in conjunction to the slightly animated parts. The best animated parts are the monochromatic scenes at 0:26 but even that has similar timing problems to other parts like the tongue coming out 01:49. Everything is too fast and happens in an instant.
This videos style and presentation alone can make this a 5 out of 5 but the animation in execution holds it back from getting there. I'm giving this a soft 4 as opposed to a hard 4.5 because an obvious amount of care and love went into this project but I desperately wish this had better animation to go with it
